Obesity and Pain

Adipocytes (fat cells) do not just store fat, they are mini endocrine/immune organs that play a role in your metabolism and immune system. In obesity, adipocytes are enlarged and function differently than adipocytes in someone with a healthy weight. These enlarged adipocytes increase insulin resistance which may lead to diabetes. Remember, elevated blood sugar in diabetics also increases inflammation. There are also higher levels of pro-inflammatory markers such as IL-6 and C-reactive protein in obese individuals compared with individuals with a healthy weight. Adiponectin and leptin levels are suboptimal in those who are obese which effect cardiovascular risk, insulin resistance, and again INFLAMMATION! As you can see, obesity increases inflammation through multiple mechanisms in a complex system. This is not just another reason you should maintain a healthy weight through proper diet and exercise. It’s THE reason you should maintain a healthy weight through a healthy lifestyle. Once again, most diseases are rooted in chronic inflammation! Additionally, the body is not designed to effectively carry significant excess weight as this causes excessive mechanical trauma (spine and joint degeneration) as well as the cardiovascular risks.
