Water vs. other beverages

Don’t forget your water!

  • Make sure you are drinking lots of pure water throughout the day!
  • It is best to use glass or stainless steal to store water when possible since BPA’s, found in plastic products, have been shown to impact hormones.
  • If you do not have a good water filtration system at your home, there are many options for you:
    • Fill up at Wholefoods. Good deal and good quality water.
    • Buy a good quality filtration system. This would be one that removes all chlorine, fluoride, and chloramines. Also, you want to make sure that it provides adequate mineral content.
      • A great brand is the Nikken 5 level filtration with remineralization for drinking water and the shower head attachment as well.
      • Kangen is a filtration system that focuses on super alkaline water for its healing properties. While there is no compelling evidence to support this, people claim they are getting great results and feeling good on this water. This is a much more expensive water system.

What about other beverages?

  • It is a standard policy to say, “Don’t drink your carbs”. It is better to eat a whole piece a fruit that is high in fiber than drink fruit juice. A cup of orange juice is approximately 8 oranges and so by drinking fruit juice, the carbohydrates undesirably can really add up.
  • Soda is very acidic to the body. Particularly dark soda (high in phosphoric acid). When your body is acidic it leaches minerals from your bone to make your blood alkaline again. This is why drinking large amounts of soda may increase the risk of osteoporosis.
  • Most beverages are sweetened with high fructose corn syrup. This stores as fat easier than sugar!
  • Artificial sweeteners such as aspartame are excitotoxins (bad for the brain) and also have negative effects on other parts of the body. See 15 page list of studies on the negative effects of aspartame:  [download id=”2″]
  • Herbal teas and homemade lemonade with raw honey or stevia (all natural zero calorie sweetener) are better choices.
  • Coffee has its pros and cons. It all depends on the individual. If you have hormone or sleep issues stay away from it. If you can tolerate it, don’t have more than 1 cup a day. The best choice is organic alkaline coffee which adds ganoderma mushroom extract to make the coffee alkaline (available online). If you currently drink a lot of coffee/caffeine beverages you will need to wean off slowly so you don’t go through withdrawal.
